What to do on a 6-night itinerary in the Land of Encanto, more specifically the Antioquia region?
Here are a few suggestions based on my own experiences:
🌸Disconnect at the beautiful Cannua eco lodge, outside of Medellin. Soak up the gorgeous verdant views, indulge in amazing culinary experiences and become familiar with the philosophy of permaculture. Learn about plants, flowers, cacao and even rum!
🌸Learn about the chocolate making process at a private authentic farm. As a bonus you will learn about Colombian flowers, plants and herbs. Afterwards visit a nearby waterfall with crystal clear water, exfoliate with pure chocolate paste, scrub your feet with the rocks and return to your resort fully rejuvenated.
🌸Visit one of the most colorful towns in the world: Guatape! Stroll through cobblestone streets, eat a local sancocho soup, and enjoy the happy colors of all the houses in the town. Finish the day with a shot of aguardiente in one of the cafes near the church plaza.
🌸Visit a private flower exporting farm with stunning vistas, eat an authentic and healthy lunch with the family and truly feel like you are living in Colombia instead of merely visiting.
🌸Visit the legendary silletera (flower carrier) Leopoldina in her own private finca and find out about the tradition of the annual flower festival of Medellin. This tradition will really impress you. You can also practice being a silletero/a yourself!
🌸In the city of Medellin, visit the Plaza Botero to see several of the master’s massive sculptures and take in the hustle and bustle of the city. At the Cafe Botero, order a natural passion fruit juice (add sparkling water for a twist) and sit back and take in all the sounds and sights.
🌸Have a sensory experience at the Comuna 13 neighborhood which is home to street dancers, freestyle rappers and many colorful murals. A fun place with a massive view over Comuna 13 and the nearby mountains is the cafe Mirador La Chiva de la 13. It has a mini chiva bus for pictures, as well as drinks and smaller snacks.
🌸In the evening, check out one of the many restaurants and bars in the Provenza area of the Poblado neighborhood. This is definitely a touristy area so you won’t be the only visitor. You may find some bars that have tables with signs for "Basic Spanish", "Basic Portuguese" and you can just take a seat and practice another language. Cool concept!
From authentic to touristy… Colombia and its people will simply amaze you.
